8.4 Conversation: Can I speak to Mr. Saan?
1. Reading
Read the conversation between Smith (A), Sinaa (B), and Mr. Saan (C). Compare it to the previous dialogue in section 8.3.
A: អាឡូ ជម្រាបសួរ!
B: ចា! ជម្រាបសួរ!
A: ខ្ញុំសុំនិយាយជាមួយលោក សាន្ត បានទេ?
B: ចាំបន្តិច!
C: អាឡូ!
A: អាឡូ! ជម្រាបសួរលោក សាន្ត[1]។ ខ្ញុំឈ្មោះ ស្មីត ខ្ញុំជាគ្រូបង្រៀន ហើយយើងបានជួបគ្នានៅអាមេរិកឆ្នាំ២០១៩។
C: អូ! ស្មីតសុខសប្បាយទេ? ស្មីតនៅកម្ពុជាមែនទេ?
A: ឥឡូវនេះខ្ញុំនៅភ្នំពេញ។
C: ល្អណាស់! ស្មីតមានលេខទូរសព្ទទេ?
A: បាទ! ខ្ញុំមាន។ លេខ ០១២ ៥៦៧ ៧២០។
After reading, answer the following questions.
The Expressions “សុំ” and “សូម”
To make a request, the pattern សុំ…បានទេ is used, for example: ខ្ញុំសុំជួបលោកស្មីតបានទេ? “Can I meet Mr. Smith?”. សូម “Please” is used to indicate the politeness. However, from time to time, the word “សូម” and “សុំ” are interchangeably used.
Compare:
- សូមចាំទីនេះ។ “Please wait here.”
- សុំជួបលោកសុខបានទេ? “Can I meet Mr. Sok?”

Read the conversation again and then fill in the blanks with “សុំ” and “សូម” where you think appropriate.
