Adverbs of Frequency

 

 The adverbs of frequency that are commonly used in Khmer are listed in the chat below and they can be placed in different positions.

Positions of adverbs of frequency in Khmer:

  1. តែងតែ “Always”: It is placed before the main verb.
  2. ជាធម្មតា “Usually”: It is placed at the beginning of the sentence.
  3. ញឹកញាប់ “Frequently”: It is placed before and after the main verb.
  4. ពេលខ្លះ “Sometimes”: It is placed at the beginning or at the end of the sentence or before the main verb.
  5. ម្តងម្កាល “Occasionally”: It is placed at the beginning or at the end of the sentence.
  6. កម្រ “Rarely”: It is placed before the main verb.
  7. មិនដែល “Never”: It is place before the main verb.
The question word ញឹកញាប់ប៉ុណ្ណា? “how often?” in Khmer

 

 To ask how often someone does certain things, the following pattern is used: Subject+ Verb +Object + ញឹកញាប់ប៉ុណ្ណា? “how often?” following by the question mark (?)

Examples:

Q: ​អ្នកអានញឹកញាប់ប៉ុណ្ណា?  “How often do you read?”

A: ខ្ញុំមិនដែលលេងបាល់ទាត់ទេ។ “I never play football.”
The particle ដង​

 

 The particle ដង​ is combined with the numbers to describe something has been done a few times, but not very often. However, when មួយ “one” is used with a particle ដង, it is contracted to ម្តង.

Compare:

ម្តង “once”

២ដង “twice”
