Chapter 1: Tamil Alphabets and Numbers

The Tamil script is written left to right and in rows that are also read from left to right. It has 12 vowels, 18 consonants, 216 consonant + vowel combinations and one ayudha ezthu. In this chapter, we will learn the Tamil alphabets as well as the Tamil numbers. The current Tamil script descended from the Tamil Brahmi (Thamizi) script and the Pallava Grantha script. It is sometimes called  Vattezhuthu.

Goals of this Chapter:

  • To learn to identify the Tamil alphabets.
  • To learn to read, write and pronounce the Tamil letters.
  • To learn the difference between many same sounding letters in Tamil.
  • To read simple words in Tamil.
  • To learn the basic Tamil numbers.
