 NUMBERS IN TAMIL Enngal (எண்கள்)

In this chapter, we will learn Tamil numbers so we can use them in daily life, like telling phone numbers, time and date and schedules. We are going to learn the regular Arabic numerals with equivalent Tamil words. The goal of this chapter is to be able to tell time, date, and year in any conversation. This will be useful in giving personal information like age, phone number, and address.

Numbers From 1 to 10

Note: In Tamil Nine, Nineteen, Ninety, and Nine Hundred are all considered as “one less” So they are called Onpathu (ஒன்பது), Pathuonpathu (பத்தொன்பது), Thonnooru (தொண்ணூறு) and Tholayiram (தொள்ளாயிரம்). These can be taken to mean one less than the next complete number.

Numbers From 11 to 19

When you get to the “teen” numbers, you just add “padhi” to the front of the numbers above till you hit nineteen, they are as follows:

Then 20 is ‘irubathu” or “iruvathu” all the numbers that start with twenty have “irubathu”+“thi” then the numbers from one to nine get added to the end of it, like so:

30 is “Mupadhu” all the numbers in the thirties have ‘mupa-thi’ in front of them, like so:

Can you see the pattern now?

40 is “Narpadhu” so all the numbers in the forties start with “narpathi”.

50 is “Aipadhu” all the numbers in the fifties start with ‘aibathi”.

This is how the numbers are added to each other to make bigger numbers.

Now Let Us Learn Counting by 10’s till 2000

We are learning this because this will help us say the years.

10 = பத்து (pathu)

20 = இருபது (iruvathu)

30 = முப்பது (mupathu)

40 = நாற்பது (napathu)

50 = ஐம்பது (aibathu)

60 = அறுபது (aruvathu)

70 = எழுபது (ezuvathu)

80 = எண்பது (enpathu)

90 = தொண்ணூறு (thonooru)

100 = நூறு (nooru)

1000 = ஆயிரம் (aiyaram)

2000 = இரண்டாயிரம் (iradaiyram)

2023 = இரண்டயிரத்தி இருவத்தி மூன்று (Iradayirathi trivathi mondru)

Ordinal Numbers in Tamil

Ordinal numbers in Tamil are made by adding the suffix “ஆவது” to the number.

For example :

first – muthalaavathu – முதலாவது

second – irandaavathu – இரண்டாவது

third – moonraavathu – மூன்றாவது

fourth – naankaavathu – நான்காவது
