Drag and Drop Descriptive Drop Zones

(For Intermediate Arabic I… and more?)

From a reviewer: “H5P drag and drop exercises [MARY: it is actually drag the words exercises], the drop zone do not include any type of description other than announcing Drop Zone 1, Drop Zone 2, etc. when using a screen reader. An accessible list of drop zone areas should be provided for screen reader users. It would also be useful to have instructions on how to interact with the exercise if using keyboard and/or screen reader.”

Possible Solution: Include Plaintext Version of Exercise

There are a host of other issues with this drag the words activity reported by other reviewers:

  • Once a term has been selected, the user is unable to navigate through the blank spaces and is stuck with only the first blank space to drop terms in.
  • If the user tries to place the term in other blank spaces, the term actually becomes unselected. This problem is apparent with using both Tab and arrow keys in NVDA.
  • Also, It is extremely difficult to navigate through the answer pool to select an answer (a lot of the time the focus just skips one or many options)
  • Some of the blanks are skipped or all in some cases.
  • Using the left and right arrows works but is severely inaccessible when there is a large paragraph with many blanks.

Perhaps it would be best to instead include a plain text version until we can reach out to H5P? This can be under a dropdown or visually hidden from sighted users. Otherwise, I’m not sure what a good descriptive label for drop zones would be and would need guidance to determine that.

Instructions for Keyboard Navigation and Plaintext Version of Activity

Instructions

Use arrow keys to navigate each line. Within a line, tab to navigate through the drop zone(s). However, this activity has a tendency to skip drop zones within lines if there are several; left and right arrow keys may be required to access drop zones in these cases.

To access the draggable options, tab past the last drop zone within a line. Using left/right arrow keys alone, multiple options will be read at a time, with every few options becoming focused.

To navigate individual draggable options, tab into the draggable options, then use ALT + left/right arrow keys.

To select a draggable option, press “Space”. To drop it into a drop zone, navigate to that drop zone, and click space again. To remove an option from a drop zone, select the drop zone, then click space.
