How to Ask for Availability

One important question when setting up a meeting is to ask for participants’ availability. The common question to ask for availability is: អ្នកទំនេរទេ? “Are you available?” If they are unsure when they will be available, they will use the words ប្រហែល which mean “about” or “around.”

Example:

A: ស្អែកអ្នកទំនេរទេ? “Are you available tomorrow?”

B: បាទ ប្រហែលនៅម៉ោង ១០ព្រឹក។ “Yes, I am, around 10 am.”

ចុះ…? “How About…?”

There are many uses for this word, but one of the ways is to put it at the beginning of a sentence, which means “how about?” or “what about?” It is used when the speaker wants to propose a new option or idea. This phrase is used in both formal and informal situations. To make the question more polite, the question យ៉ាងម៉េចដែរ? is added at the end of the sentence.

Example:

  • ចុះម៉ោង៤រសៀល? “How about Friday afternoon at 4 pm?”
  • ចុះម៉ោង៤រសៀល យ៉ាងម៉េចដែរ? “How about Friday afternoon at 4 pm?”

How To Ask for Instructions

A common question word to use is យ៉ាងម៉េច which means “how.” To ask for instructions, you can use these phrases, ដើម្បីកក់បន្ទប់ប្រជុំ ខ្ញុំធ្វើយ៉ាងម៉េច? which both mean “What is the step/procedure?” The question usually starts with ដើម្បី meaning “in order to” followed by and យ៉ាងម៉េច “how” or អ្វីខ្លះ? “what steps?”

Example:

  • ដើម្បីកក់បន្ទប់ប្រជុំ ខ្ញុំត្រូវធ្វើយ៉ាងម៉េច? “What are the steps in booking a meeting room?”
ខ្ញុំគិតថា… “I think that…” ខ្ញុំគិត means “I think,” and ថា is “that.” Unlike in English, the word ថា must be used at all time in this structure. Other verbs such as មានអារម្មណ៍ “feel,” ជឿ “believe,” and ច្បាស់ “be sure” can also be used with this structure.

Example:

  • ខ្ញុំគិតថាយើងអាចពិភាក្សាគ្នាថ្ងៃស្អែក។ “I think we can discuss tomorrow.”

To request other people’s opinion or feedback, the question យ៉ាងម៉េចដែរ? is placed after the word គិត “think.”

Example:

  • អ្នកគិតយ៉ាងម៉េចដែរ? “What do you think?”
Relative Pronouns in Khmer

Similar to English, relative pronouns in Khmer are used to introduce relative clauses. Relative clauses tell us more about people and things.

Example:

  • លោកសុខា ដែលមានអាយុ៧៦ឆ្នាំបានចូលនិវត្តន៍។ “Mr. Sokha, who is 76, has retired.”
  • នេះជាផ្ទះ ដែលឪពុកខ្ញុំបានសង់។ “This is the house which my father built.”

Unlike English, Khmer relative pronoun ដែល can mean not only “who,” “which,” and “that,” but also “where” in some contexts.

Example:

  • សាលាដែលយើងរៀនមានបណ្ណាល័យធំមួយ។ “The school where we study has a big library.”
