Addressing People Formally and Respectfully in Cambodia
When addressing an individual in a formal setting or for the first time, it is advisable to use the Khmer formal title prefix លោក/អ្នកស្រី/លោកស្រី, which is equivalent to the English terms “Mr./Ms./Mrs.”
Gesture “Sampeah”
Traditionally, Khmer people do not shake hands for greetings. Khmer greetings often involve a Sampeah, which is a polite gesture involving two hands raised and put together as if in prayer and the head is bowed. It is practiced everywhere, including in business settings.
