C. Special Case: The Dotted-Eighth-Note Beat as Sextuplet Notation

Introductory Exercises

Small-value compound time signatures are sometimes used to notate sextuplets in standard simple meters. Thus, in Exercise 6C-1, 18/16 is used to notated sextuplets in 3/4 meter, and in Exercise 6C-2, 24/16 is used to notated sextuplets in 4/4 meter.

Exercise for Application

Exercise 6C-3 offers a context to practice this sextuplet notation with more varied rhythmic patterning. As with Exercise 6C-1, 18/16 is used to notated sextuplets in 3/4. In this case, all parts are notated in 18/16 until the sixth measure, when the piano switches to 3/4 notation.
