Welcome to Elementary Chinese II Workbook, an interactive open educational resource (OER) that accompanies its published OER textbook: Elementary Chinese II. This workbook, also funded by the Michigan State University Libraries’ Open Educational Resources Program, is crafted for Chinese beginning learners to develop their listening and reading comprehension abilities through engaging and interactive learning experiences.
At the heart of this OER workbook are H5P interactive exercises, which provide a dynamic and immersive way to practice and reinforce Chinese language learners’ basic knowledge and skills. These exercises are tailored to help them build confidence in listening to words and phrases, enabling them to recognize and interpret spoken language with ease. Simultaneously, they will strengthen their listening comprehension by engaging with audio materials that reflect close-to-real-life conversations and scenarios.
In addition to honing their listening skills, this workbook also places a strong emphasis on reading Chinese texts progressing from words/phrases to sentences and paragraphs. Through carefully curated texts in a variety of contexts and interactive, game-like activities, students will develop their reading comprehension, allowing them to grasp the meaning of sentences, paragraphs, and longer passages with greater fluency.
This workbook offers a structured yet flexible and interactive approach to mastering the receptive skills essential for effective communication in Chinese. The interactive exercises for each dialogue contain four parts. The first part focuses on target words, phrases, and sentence listening and typing, with the purpose of consolidating learners’ foundation. The second part focuses on paragraph-level listening comprehension. The third part is designed to develop learners’ character/word/phrase recognition as well as important sentence structures. The last part aims to test learners’ reading comprehension in a comprehensive manner. By combining traditional learning methods with cutting-edge H5P interactive exercises, this OER workbook ensures that learners’ learning experience is both effective and enjoyable.
I hope learners can take their Chinese language skills to new heights by using this resource. If you have any suggestions on how to improve this workbook, please feel free to contact me at zhouweny@msu.edu.
