2.2 Making Requests and Placing Orders
In this part we learn about basic verbs and their uses in making requests or commands, and about two types of verb forms: verb base and infinitive.
Imperative sentences are sentences that express request, commands, order, instruction, etc. Like in English, the subject “you” is dropped. However, unlike English, Telugu has two different forms of the pronoun “you,” which are used in two different sociocultural contexts, as explained below.
| English | Telugu | Uses |
|---|---|---|
| You | మీరు | మీరు is used for someone who is older in age or in a higher socioeconomic class. It is used for anyone to whom one wants to show respect. |
| You | నువ్వు | నువ్వు is used for someone who is of the same age group and same socioeconomic class. It is used for someone who is younger in age or in a lower socioeconomic class. It is also used for someone who is very intimate to the speaker, such as friend or mother, and is also used to refer to God. |
