2.1 Simple Sentences and Basic Verbs

A verb is an action word. Telugu verbs can be classified into two categories: regular and irregular. Please note that we use verb base for all positive sentences and infinitive for all negative sentences. So it’s important in Telugu to learn both forms of the verb.

We also learn simple sentence structures of past, present, future, and habitual in both positive and negative ways. (We will have a detailed discussion in a separate chapter about each of these tense structures).

Sentence Structures

Positive Sentence in Past Tense

నేను అన్నం తిన్నాను.

తిన్ (verb base) + ఆ (past tense marker) + ను (subject suffix).

Please note that there is subject and subject suffix agreement in the above structure.

Negative Sentence in Past Tense

నేను అన్నం తినలేదు.

తిన (infinitive) + అ + లేదు (action negation).

Please note that there’s no subject and subject suffix agreement in the above structure.

Positive Sentence in Present Tense

నేను హోం వర్క్ చేస్తున్నాను.

చేస్ (verb base) + తున్నా (present tense marker) + ను (subject suffix).

Negative Sentence in Present Tense

నేను హోంవర్క్ చేయడం లేదు.

చేయ (infinitive) + డం (present tense negative marker) + లేదు (action negation).

Positive Sentence in Future Tense

నేను రేపు హోంవర్క్ చేస్తాను.

చేస్ (verb base) + తా (future tense marker) + ను (subject suffix).

Negative Sentence in Future Tense

నేను రేపు హోంవర్క్ చేయను.

చేయ (infinitive) + ను (subject suffix).

Unlike past tense negative and present tense negative, there is a subject and subject suffix agreement in a future negative structure.

Positive Sentence in Habitual Tense

నేను హోంవర్క్ చేస్తాను.

చేస్ (verb base) + తా (future tense marker) + ను (subject suffix).

Negative Sentence in Habitual Tense

నేను హోంవర్క్ చేయను.

చేయ (infinitive) + ను (subject suffix).

A Note on Habitual and Future Tense

Please note that future tense and habitual tense have a similar structure unless you specify the time.

For example: నేను రేపు హోంవర్క్ చేయను is future tense and నేను హోంవర్క్ చేయను is a habitual tense.
