8.8 ਕੇ Construction
In Punjabi, ਕੇ is used to combine two or more actions, which come one after another. In ਕੇ construction, the subject should be the same in all actions, and it should be used just once. ਕੇ comes with verb stem and the last action/verb takes tense specific conjugation. In English, it is translated as “having done X.”
Example phrases:
- ਚਾਹ ਪੀ ਕੇ (after having tea)
- ਕਿਤਾਬ ਲਿਖ ਕੇ (after writing a book)
- ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ (after having food)
Example sentences:
- ਮੈਂ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉੱਠਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
- ਕੌਫੀ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
- ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
In ਕੇ construction: ਮੈਂ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉਠ ਕੇ, ਕੌਫੀ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
- ਮੈਂ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
- ਮੈਂ ਸਫਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
- ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੰਮ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
In ਕੇ construction: ਮੈਂ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ, ਸਫਾਈ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੰਮ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
Adverbial Use of ਕੇ
Examples:
- ਉਹ ਲੇਟ ਕੇ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। (Laying down he is reading a book.)
- ਉਹ ਹੱਸ ਕੇ ਬੋਲਿਆ। (He said happily.)
- ਉਹ ਭੱਜ ਕੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ। (He arrived running.)
ਕਰਕੇ (Because of/Due to)
After nouns & pronouns, ਕਰਕੇ is used and it gives the sense of “because of/due to.”
Example phrases:
- ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ। (Because of illness.)
- ਖਰਾਬ ਮੌਸਮ ਕਰਕੇ। (Due to bad weather.)
- ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕਰਕੇ। (Because of you.)
Example sentences:
- ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰੀ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। (I feel very weak because of the illness.)
- ਖਰਾਬ ਮੌਸਮ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕਿਆ। (Due to bad weather, I could not reach the meeting on time.)
- ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਅੱਜ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਆਈ। (Because of you, I came here.)
Idiomatic Use of ਕਰਕੇ
- ਖਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ (especially)
- ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਕਰਕੇ (one by one)
Example sentences:
- ਇਹ ਮਿਠਾਈ ਮੈਂ ਖਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਦੀਵਾਲੀ ਤੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। (I eat this sweet especially on Diwali.)
- ਇੱਕ ਇੱਕ ਕਰਕੇ ਬੋਲੋ। (Speak one by one.)
ਕੇ with Perfective Aspect
In perfective sentences, the use of ਨੇ with the subject depends on the last verb which comes with its perfective aspect and agreement markers.
Examples:
- ਗੀਤਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ।
- ਗੀਤਾ ਨੇ ਚਿੱਠੀ ਲਿਖੀ।
- In ਕੇ- ਗੀਤਾ ਨੇ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਚਿੱਠੀ ਲਿਖੀ।
