7.8 ਸਕਣਾ: “Can” Construction

ਸਕਣਾ is an equivalent of English “can.” ਸਕਣਾ occurs with the stem of the verb and agrees with the subject of the sentence in number and gender. It occurs in perfective, habitual, and future aspect.

Formation: Verb stem + ਸਕਣਾ + auxiliary of present ਹੋਣਾ (to be).

Examples:

  • ਮੈਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲਿਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ। (I can write Punjabi.)
  • ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ? (Can you speak Punjabi?)
  • ਰਮਨ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕੇਗੀ। (Raman will not be able to go to the meeting.)

ਸਕਣਾ

is used in three different senses:

  1. To show capacity/ability
  2. A polite form of request and inquire about one’s willingness
  3. General possibility

Usages of ਸਕਣਾ

1. To Show Capacity/Ability

1. ਮੈਂ ਗੱਡੀ ਚਲਾ ਸਕਦਾ/ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ। I can drive a car.
2. ਮੈਂ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਸਕਦਾ/ਸਕਦੀ ਹਾਂ। I can cook food.
3. ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ ਸਿਤਾਰ ਵਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। My sister can play a sitar.

2. Polite Form of Request

1. ਕੀ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਕੁਰਸੀ ਲੈ ਸਕਦੀ/ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ? Can/Could I take this chair?

3. General Possibility

1. ਉਹ ਕੁੜੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਧੋਖਾ ਦੇ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। That girl can cheat on you.
2. ਮੇਰਾ ਦੋਸਤ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਲਈ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। My friend can visit me tomorrow.

Negation of ਸਕਣਾ

When ਸਕਣਾ appears in a negative sentence, it gives the sense of inability and inappropriateness. In negative sentences, ਨਹੀਂ can come either before or after the verb stem and the verb “to be” (ਹੈ, ਹਾਂ, ਹਨ, ਹੋ, ਹੈਂ) are dropped.

1. ਮੈਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦਾ/ਸਕਦੀ। I can’t speak Punjabi.
2. ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ। ਇਹ ਅਨੁਚਿਤ ਹੈ। You can’t wear that dress in a village. It is indecent.
3. ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜਨਤਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਿਗਰਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੀ ਸਕਦੇ। ਇਹ ਗੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਹੈ। In Chandigarh you cannot smoke publicly. It is illegal.
