6.7 Conjunct Verbs
Conjunct verbs are usually combined with a noun or adjective to denote a single verbal idea. Verbs ਕਰਨਾ, ਹੋਣਾ, ਦੇਣਾ, ਆਉਣਾ, ਲੱਗਣਾ, etc. are used in conjunct verbs. In a conjunct verb, the noun/adjective part of the conjunct verb remains unchanged and the verb ਕਰਨਾ, ਹੋਣਾ, ਦੇਣਾ, ਆਉਣਾ, ਲੱਗਣਾ agrees with the subject/object in the sentence.
Negation with Conjunct Verbs
In negative sentences, the word ਨਹੀਂ should be placed between the noun/adjective and the verb ਕਰਨਾ, ਹੋਣਾ, ਦੇਣਾ, ਆਉਣਾ, ਲੱਗਣਾ in a standard word order.
For instance:
- ਮੋਹਨ, ਸੋਹਣ ਦੀ ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। (Mohan waits for Sohan.)
- ਗੀਤਾ ਕਮਰਾ ਸਾਫ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ। (Geeta is not cleaning the room.)
In the above sentence, ਉਡੀਕ ਕਰਨਾ is a conjunct verb consisting of a noun, ਉਡੀਕ (wait), and ਕਰਨਾ (to do), denoting “to wait.”

Conjunct Verb with ਹੋਣਾ (Intransitive Verb)
The conjunct verbs with ਕਰਨਾ may have their intransitive counterparts with ਹੋਣਾ.

(Some verbs like ਤਕਲੀਫ਼ ਹੋਣਾ, ਦਰਦ ਹੋਣਾ, ਦੁੱਖ ਹੋਣਾ, ਸਜਾ ਹੋਣਾ, ਜੁਕਾਮ ਹੋਣਾ, etc. have no transitive counterparts with ਕਰਨਾ.)
