4.8 Likes and Dislikes
When the subject is not actively doing something, but is simply the experiencer of an action, ਨੂੰ is used directly after the subject. There are a few verbs that require subject + ਨੂੰ such as:
- X ਨੂੰ Y ਪਸੰਦ ਹੋਣਾ (X to like Y)
- X ਨੂੰ Y (ਦਾ) ਪਤਾ ਹੋਣਾ (X to know about Y)
- X ਨੂੰ Y ਆਉਣਾ (X to know how Y)
- X ਨੂੰ Y ਲੱਗਣਾ (X to seem Y)
- X ਨੂੰ Y ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਆਉਣਾ (X to miss Y)
In this chapter we will discuss only X ਨੂੰ Y ਪਸੰਦ ਹੋਣਾ (X to like Y).
To Like
To express liking and disliking someone or something in Punjabi the verb ਪਸੰਦ ਹੋਣਾ and ਪਸੰਦ ਨਾ ਹੋਣਾ can be used respectively. When you like someone or something, you are not doing anything actively, but you are simply experiencer of something that is pleasing to you. Hence, the subject takes ਨੂੰ.
Examples:
- ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ (I like Indian food.)
- ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ (My sister likes tea.)
- ਬਚਪਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੱਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਧ ਪਸੰਦ ਸੀ (In his/her childhood, the child liked milk.)
To Dislike
In order to express dislike, negative participle ਨਹੀਂ is used. If ਨਹੀਂ is used just before the main verb, auxiliary will be dropped and if ਨਹੀਂ used after the main verb, auxiliary cannot be dropped. For past tense, auxiliary cannot be dropped in any case. See examples for more clarity.
ਨਹੀਂ Used After the Main Verb
- ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। (I don’t like Indian food.)
- ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। (My sister don’t likes tea.)
- ਬਚਪਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੱਚੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਧ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ। (In his/her childhood, the child didn’t like milk.)
ਨਹੀਂ Used Before the Main Verb
- ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਸੰਦ। (I don’t like Indian food.)
