ਸਤਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲਿ ਜੀ,

In this video, we are going to learn about adjectives in Punjabi. So, there are two types of adjectives in Punjabi: marked and unmarked.

Marked adjectives end in “kanna” “ਾ,” like “sasta” ਸਸਤਾ and “Mehnga” ਮਹਿੰਗਾ. “sasta” ਸਸਤਾ is “cheap” and “Mehnga” ਮਹਿੰਗਾ is “expensive.” These are marked adjectives.

Unmarked adjectives, other than ending with kanna “ਾ” are unmarked adjectives like “Laal” ਲਾਲ (red), ਦਿਲਚਸਪ (interesting).

[Marked Adjectives]

So, marked adjectives have four forms: aa, ae, ee, and eean:

  • “ਾ” is masculine singular,
  • “ੇ” is masculine plural,
  • “ੀ” is feminine singular, and
  • “ੀਆਂ” is feminine plural,

and these forms are changed according to the noun.

As you know, adjectives modify by nouns. So “Sasta Kappra” ਸਸਤਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ becomes ਸਸਤੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ, ਸਸਤੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ is singular and it would be ਸਸਤੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ for plural. So, ਕੱਪੜਾ is masculine, that’s why; ਸਸਤਾ masculine singular. ਸਸਤੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ, ਕੱਪੜੇ is here plural, that’s why ਸਸਤੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ. “Kitaab” ਕਿਤਾਬ is feminine singular, that’s why ਸਸਤੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ. ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ is feminine plural, that’s why ਸਸਤੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ।.

[Unmarked Adjectives]

For unmarked adjectives, they do not change at all, they remain same. So, “Laal Kappra” ਲਾਲ ਕੱਪੜਾ, ਲਾਲ ਕੱਪੜੇ, ਲਾਲ ਕਿਤਾਬ, and ਲਾਲ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ. So, they do not change at all, they remain same. The same way ਦਿਲਚਸਪ, ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਮੁੰਡਾ, ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਕੁੜੀ, ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ. So, they remain the same, they do not change at all.

So, now the question is: where do you add adjectives in the sentence? So, there is a sentence structure: subject, object, and verb. You can add adjective over here or you can add adjective over here. So, you can write ਇਹ ਲਾਲ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ (This is a red book.) or ਇਹ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਲਾਲ ਹੈ (This book is red.); just like in English.

Marked Adjectives

Marked adjectives change their form according to the following nouns.

Marked Adjectives: Ending with Vowel “ਾ”

ਸਸਤਾ (cheap) ਸਸਤਾ ਕੱਪੜਾ (cheap cloth) ਸਸਤੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ (cheap clothes) ਸਸਤੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ (cheap book) ਸਸਤੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ (cheap books)
ਮਹਿੰਗਾ (expensive) ਮਹਿੰਗਾ ਪਰਦਾ (expensive curtain) ਮਹਿੰਗੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ (expensive curtains) ਮਹਿੰਗੀ ਕਮੀਜ਼ (expensive shirt) ਮਹਿੰਗੀਆਂ ਕਮੀਜ਼ਾਂ (expensive shirts)
ਮੋਟਾ (fat) ਮੋਟਾ ਮੁੰਡਾ (fat boy) ਮੋਟੇ ਮੁੰਡੇ (fat boys) ਮੋਟੀ ਕੁੜੀ (fat girl) ਮੋਟੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ (fat girls)
ਚੰਗਾ (good) ਚੰਗਾ ਕਮਰਾ (good room) ਚੰਗੇ ਕਮਰੇ (good room) ਚੰਗੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ (good book) ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ (good books)

Unmarked Adjectives

No changes at all. They remain the same.

Unmarked Adjectives: Other than Ending with “ਾ”

Exceptions

There are few adjectives that end with (ਾ) but do not change their forms according to number and gender of the nouns that these adjectives qualify. For example: ਵਧੀਆ (good, high quality), ਘਟੀਆ (low quality).

Word Order for Adjectives

Adjectives can be used predicatively (following), and attributively (preceding).

Examples:

ਇਹ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ। This is a big city. ਇਹ ਵੱਡਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ। This city is big.
ਇਹ ਚੰਗਾ ਮੁੰਡਾ ਹੈ। He is a good boy. ਇਹ ਮੁੰਡਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ। This boy is good.
ਇਹ ਸਾੜੀ ਸਸਤੀ ਹੈ। This is a cheap sari. ਇਹ ਸਸਤੀ ਸਾੜੀ ਹੈ। This sari is cheap.

If there are two marked adjectives with one noun, both modify by the noun.

Predicatively Attributively

ਇਹ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਸਸਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਹਨ। These clothes are cheap and beautiful. ਇਹ ਸਸਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਹਨ। These are cheap and beautiful clothes.

If there is one adjective with two nouns, it agrees with the closest noun.

ਇਹ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਹਨ। These books and clothes are good. ਇਹ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਹਨ। These clothes and books are good.

Adjective + ਜਿਹਾ

In Punjabi, ਜਿਹਾ is used with adjectives to add extra meaning. ਜਿਹਾ means looking, seeming. ਜਿਹਾ changes its form according to number and gender of the following nouns.

Examples:

  • Adjective + ਜਿਹਾ + noun masculine = ਸੋਹਣਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਆਦਮੀ (Good looking man.)
  • Adjective + ਜਿਹੀ + noun feminine = ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਔਰਤ (Good looking lady.)
  • Adjective + ਜਿਹੇ + noun masculine plural = ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਬੱਚੇ (Good looking children.)
  • Adjective + ਜਿਹੀਆਂ + noun feminine plural = ਸੋਹਣੀਆਂ ਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ (Good looking girls.)

Quantitative Adjective + ਜਿਹਾ

ਮਾੜਾ ਜਿਹਾ/ਥੋੜਾ ਜਿਹਾ

  • ਮਾੜਾ ਜਿਹਾ/ਥੋੜਾ ਜਿਹਾ: ਦੁੱਧ (Little bit milk)
  • ਮਾੜੀ ਜਿਹੀ/ਥੋੜੀ ਜਿਹੀ: ਚਾਹ (f) (Little bit tea)
