2.4 Honorific and Respectful Form
Using the Honorific Marker ਜੀ
The honorific marker ਜੀ is used to give respect to someone. It is added to proper names to add more politeness and respect. It is used while addressing seniors, colleagues, older persons, relatives, people who are of upper social status, religious figures, and literary figures. For example:
- ਜੈਸਿਕਾ ਜੀ (Jessica Ji)
- ਦਾਦਾ ਜੀ (grandfather)
- ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ (teacher/mentor)
ਜੀ always appears with the plural verb form. For example: ਇਹ ਨੀਲਮ ਜੀ ਹਨ।

Addressing People
In addition to ਜੀ, Punjabi speakers also use ਮਾਣਯੋਗ (honorable) and ਸਤਿਕਾਰਯੋਗ (respected) before a proper name or designation for addressing people. For example: ਮਾਣਯੋਗ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਜੀ (Honorable Prime Minister), ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਯੋਗ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰਕਾ ਚੋਪੜਾ ਜੀ (respected Priyanka Chopra). These forms of address are quite formal and are usually used in formal situations.
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮਾਨ, ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮਤੀ, and ਕੁਮਾਰੀ are also used before proper Hindu names, while ਸਰਦਾਰ/ਸਰਦਾਰਨੀ are used with Sikh proper names for addressing people. ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮਾਨ, ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮਤੀ, and ਕੁਮਾਰੀ simply convey the meaning of Mr., Mrs., and Ms. respectively.
Hindu names:
- ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਾਨ ਰਮੇਸ਼ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਜੀ (Mr. Ramesh Kumar)
- ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਜੀ (Mrs. Pooja)
- ਕੁਮਾਰੀ ਸ਼ੈਲਜਾ ਜੀ (Ms. Shelja)
Sikh names:
- ਸਰਦਾਰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ (Sardar Gurpartap Singh)
- ਸਰਦਾਰਨੀ ਬਲਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਜੀ (Sardarni Baljeet Kaur)
