Introduction

This theme based, interactive, open-source online textbook is designed for beginning level learners of Bangla language. By using this book, a learner will learn Bangla vowel and consonant sounds and letters, basic grammar of the language, important vocabulary, useful expressions, and—most importantly—communicative skill. By using this book, a learner will achieve Novice High or Intermediate Low level in Bangla reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills as per ACTFL scale (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages). This textbook can be used for self-study, as part of an online course, or as a traditional college course.

As a beginning level textbook, it includes many elementary grammar patterns which will give a solid foundation of the language. Vocabulary and situations are selected specifically for adult learners. Explanations are kept concise and to-the-point and many examples are given along with interactive language drills. Simple language is used throughout the book. Although the main focus is on oral communication and accompanying audio clips are used extensively, the book aims to teach all four language skills.

This book has nine chapters. The first two chapters are devoted to teaching Bangla script with sound system and basic grammatical categories like noun, pronoun, and verb. The other chapters and sub chapters cover many functional topics such as; greeting and introduction; expressing needs; speaking in present, past, and future time frames; family, kinship, occupations, describing a place, and simple shopping, etc. All topics are accompanied by relevant vocabulary, reading and listening material, and reinforcement drills.

Lastly, consider this book as the first step of a journey. It aims to lay the foundation of Bangla language with primary focus on elementary communicative skills. Due to a paucity of time, there are many relevant topics that are useful in real life situations that could not be covered here. However, the book will be updated and revised continuously in the future, based on feedback from experts and users.
