Chapter 7.1: What I Did Yesterday

When using simple past tense in Bangla, the verb is formed by adding either the -ছি ending or the -লাম ending for first-person. A speaker uses one of these, depending on personal choice, to express events that happened recently.
The following two passages have the same content but use the two different forms of verb endings mentioned above for past tense.
১। Using the -ছি ending
আমি গতকাল সকাল সাতটায় ঘুম থেকে উঠেছি। তারপর, আমি হাত-মুখ ধুয়েছি আর জলখাবার খেয়েছি। তারপর, আমি স্কুলে গিয়েছি। স্কুলে আমি চার ঘণ্টা পড়েছি। তারপর আমি দুপুরের খাবার খেয়েছি। খাওয়ার পরে, আমি বিকাল চারটে অবধি বাড়ির কাজ করেছি। সাড়ে চারটে থেকে ছ’টা পর্যন্ত আমি ব্যায়াম করেছি। সাড়ে ছ’টায় আমি বাড়ি ফিরেছি। আমি সাতটায় রাতের খাবার খেয়েছি। খাওয়ার পরে, আমি একটা গল্পের বই পড়েছি আর বন্ধুর সঙ্গে ফোনে কথা বলেছি। রাত দশটায় আমি ঘুমাতে গিয়েছি।।
২। Using the -লাম ending
আমি গতকাল সকাল সাতটায় ঘুম থেকে উঠলাম। তারপর, আমি হাত-মুখ ধুলাম আর জলখাবার খেলাম। তারপর, আমি স্কুলে গেলাম। স্কুলে আমি চার ঘণ্টা পড়লাম। তারপর আমি দুপুরের খাবার খেলাম। খাওয়ার পরে, আমি বিকাল চারটে অবধি বাড়ির কাজ করলাম। সাড়ে চারটে থেকে ছ’টা পর্যন্ত আমি ব্যায়াম করলাম। সাড়ে ছ’টায় আমি বাড়ি ফিরলাম। আমি সাতটায় রাতের খাবার খেলাম। খাওয়ার পরে, আমি একটা গল্পের বই পড়লাম আর বন্ধুর সঙ্গে ফোনে কথা বললাম। রাত দশটায় আমি ঘুমাতে গেলাম।।
