Chapter 4.4: Patterns of Verbs
Bangla verbs are conjugated for tense and person by changing the endings.
An inflectional ending is added to the verb as it is conjugated.
A verb typically consists of a root and an ending. Verbs are listed in traditional Bangla dictionaries in their verbal noun forms.
Verbal noun is formed by adding ‘া’ কার to the root of the verb. This verbal noun form is used when mentioning a verb. E.g. রাখ্ is the root and রাখা is the stem, meaning “to put” or “to place”.
Depending on the internal vowel structure and how the verbs are conjugated, Bangla verbs can be classified in ten classes.
All verbs having the same internal vowel structure are put together in one class, and those verbs follow a similar conjugation pattern.
