Chapter 8.3: Bangla Articles or Classifiers

টি, জন, রা, টা, খানা, গুলি, গুলো are known as articles, classifiers, or qualifiers in Bangla. They are used to mark a word as more definite and are placed after the word they qualify.

উদাহরণঃ মেয়েটি, বাড়িটা, বইখানা, একজন, ছেলেরা, বাড়িগুলো

Rules

  1. টি, জন, রা are added to human beings and টা, খানা, গুলি, গুলো are added to non-humans and inanimate objects, primarily.
  2. With singular nouns and pronouns referring a human being, টি is added. যেমনঃ মেয়েটি, ছেলেটি
  3. Similarly, টা is added to singular non-human and inanimate objects. যেমনঃ কুকুরটা, বাড়িটা, এটা, ওটা
  4. With plural nouns and pronouns referring human beings, রা is added. যেমনঃমেয়েরা, ছেলেরা
  5. Likewise, গুলো/গুলি is added to non-human and inanimate objects. যেমনঃ কুকুরগুলো, বাড়িগুলো, এগুলো, ওগুলো
  6. জন is used with numerals and adjectives of quantity that modify nouns denoting humans. However, it is not used with words denoting children. যেমনঃ একজন লোক, কয়েকজন বন্ধু
  7. খানা / খানি is generally used with flat, thin objects. যেমনঃ কাগজখানা, বইখানা
  8. After a number, টা is added as an article except for the following numbers: 2, 3, and 4. যেমনঃ একটা, দুটো, তিনটে, চারটে, পাঁচটা, ছটা, সাতটা, একশটা
  9. However, when a number is followed by an unit of time, length, distance, weight, etc., no article is generally added. যেমনঃ এক দিন, দশ মিটার, সাত পাউন্ড
