Practice conjugation with the verb استعد "to get ready."
Mimic the conjugation of ظنّ in the past tense.
Geminate verbs basically refer to verbs with doubled roots. In other words, the second and third radicals of the root are the same.
Consider the following verbs. What is common among them?
Examples of Geminate Verbs
| Arabic | English |
|---|---|
| أحبّ | to love |
| أحسّ | to feel |
| أعدّ | to prepare something |
| استعدّ | to prepare oneself |
| اهتمّ | to care about/be interested in |
| مرّ | to pass by |
| استقرّ | to settle down |
| ظنّ | to think/believe that |
| ردّ | to reply |
| دقّ | to knock/ring |
| ملّ | to feel bored |
| شدّ | to pull |
| فرّ | to escape |
Now look at the following examples. Take note of what happens in the past tense.
| Past | Present |

| أحببتُ الفيلم الذي شاهدته أمس | أحب هذا الفيلم كثيراً |
| أحسسنا بالملل في إجازة الصيف | أحياناً نحس بالملل في الإجازة |
| يا شباب هل استعددتم جيداً للدراسة؟ | كيف تستعدون للفصول كل يوم؟ |
| أنا اهتممت بالموسيقى عندما كنت في المدرسة | أنا لا أهتم بالموسيقى |

For geminate verbs that end with shadda, we open the shadda and use the double consonants with all pronouns except for third person pronouns.
Watch the following video for more insight on the concept of geminate verbs.
Activity 4: Verbs
Use the following word bank that includes verb stems to fill in the blanks. Use them in the right form, either past or present. You can use each verb more than once.
مرّ - ظنّ - استقرّ - أعدّ - أحسّ - أحبّ - ردّ - استعدّ
Activity 5: Question and Answer
Ask and answer questions with your classmates using the following prompts.
- What movies have you liked this year? What movies did you not like?
- How did you feel on your first day on campus?
- During your childhood, did you think you would study Arabic?
- Did you prepare lunch or dinner on the weekend?
- Did you get ready for the break?
Grammar 2: Complement Sentences
أنّ - إنّvs أنْ
In English, verbs that report information and opinions can take sentence complements with the conjunction “that,” as in:
- Mike thinks that Arabic is easy
- Susan says that she is coming.
أَنَّ basically means “that” as a conjunction. It is used with verbs of cognition or those that are used to state a fact. Study the following examples in Arabic and notice how they are similar or different.
Examples of أنّ
In the previous examples, note the verbs that precede the أنّ sentence and think of what is common among these verbs. You may also notice that أَنَّ is followed by a nominal sentence جُمْلَة إسْمِيَّة that starts with a noun or pronoun. There are some verbs and expressions that invite the use of a أنّ sentence.
The following list includes just a few examples of these. With your classmates, make up some sentences using some of these starters to share in class.
Try out this exercise with أنّ sentences:
- أظنّ أنّ blank
- عرفتُ أنّ blank
- قرأتُ أنّ blank
- تذكرتُ أنّ blank
- كتب الصحفي أنّ blank
- يعتقد بعض الناس أنّ blank
- أرى أنّ blank
- أشعر أحياناً أنّ blank
- أعلن الرئيس أنّ blank
- لا شك أنّ blank
- الحقيقة أنّ blank
- المشكلة أنّ blank
Then What About إنّ ?
إِنَّ is used at the very beginning of the nominal sentence to convey emphasis or at the start of independent nominal sentences, after the verb "to say" قَالَ, يَقُوْلُ, قُلْ.
Examples of إنّ
- إنّ السيارة جديدة
- أحمد يقول إنّ السيارة جديدة
- إنّ الامتحان صعب
- قال الطلاب إنّ الامتحان صعب
The Use of أنْ
أَنْ, which means "to," is frequently used to combine two verbs together, and commonly used with present tense verbs and less commonly with past tense. Study the following examples.
Examples ofأنْ
- أريد أن أشتري سيارة جديدة
- عادل يتمنى أن يعمل في الخارج
- لا نستطيع أن نسافر الآن
- هل تريدون أن تحصلوا على الدرجة النهائية؟
As you can see, both أنّ and أنْ look exactly the same with no diacritics, but the main distinction is that أنْ is usually followed by verbs while أنّ is followed by nouns or pronouns. Watch the following video for more insight on the distinction.
Activity 6: Conjunction Slides
Activity 7: Fill in the Conjunction
Activity 8: Question and Answer
Ask and answer questions with your classmates using the following prompts, then report your findings to the class.
Grammar 3: Verb Case Markings
الفعل المرفوع والمنصوب والمجزوم
In Arabic, as you are aware, we have case marking that are placed at the end of words. In this part, we will review the present verb endings الفعل المضارع.
The case markings for verbs are the following:
|
مجزوم ـــــــــْ |
منصوب ــــــَ |
مرفوع ــــُ |
The default for the present tense is مرفوع. In other cases, the following rules apply:
|
مجزوم ـــــــــْ |
منصوب ــــــَ |
مرفوع ــــُ |
|---|---|---|
| After | After | After |
| لم | أنْ | سـ / سوف |
| ألّا = (أنْ + لا) | لا | |
| لـ | No particle | |
| لَن |
Examples
Note the change of endings of verbs in the following sentences.
- سأسافرُ إلى مصر في الشتاء blank لن أسافرَ إلى مصر في الشتاء blank لم أسافرْ إلى مصر الشتاء
- أذهبُ إلى الجامعة كل يوم blank لن أذهبَ إلى الجامعة اليوم blank لم أذهبْ إلى الجامعة أمس
- لا أشاهدُ كرة القدم blank أحب أن أشاهدَ كرة القدم blank لم أشاهدْ كرة القدم في التلفزيون
There are some cases in which you do not see these endings. Study the following examples.
- هم لا يستطيعون الخروج اليوم blank لن يستطيعوا أن يخرجوا اليوم blank لم يستطيعوا أن يخرجوا اليوم
- لا أنامُ جيداً blank يجب أن أنامَ جيداً blank لم أنَم جيداً أمس
- هل تدرسون اللغة العربية؟ blank أنتم هنا لتدرسوا اللغة العربية blank لم تدرسوا اللغة العربية؟
Verbs that take ن in the end drop it when preceded by any particle that triggers منصوب or مجزوم. Verbs that have middle vowels lose them when preceded by لم .
Activity 9: Verb Cases
Key Takeaways
- I can distinguish different types and case positions of verbs.
