Chapter 1: Beauty Pageant

Beauty pageants began in the 18th century and have since been gaining popularity around the globe. Indonesia, with the largest Muslim population in the world, has taken part in the world beauty pageant stage since 1960. Indonesia’s participation in the beauty pageant contests have been controversial for several reasons. In this lesson, we will learn the controversies surrounding this issue.

At the end of this lesson, students are able to:

  • identify controversies surrounding beauty pageant contests in Indonesian,
  • use precise adjectives and nouns to describe beauty in different cultures around the world,
  • express their opinion related to beauty pageant contests,
  • identify reduplicated words and their meanings in Indonesian.
