In recent years, we have witnessed a range of natural disasters triggered by climate change. Extreme shifts in weather patterns, hurricanes, heatwaves, and wildfires have impacted regions that hardly experienced such calamities in the past. These catastrophes have claimed numerous lives and resulted in immense material losses. Mitigating the effects of these disasters and addressing the ensuing devastation requires a significant investment of time and extensive resources.

A portion of these disasters can be attributed, in part, to human activities. Deforestation stands out as a contributing factor that exacerbates climate change. In this lesson, we will look into deforestation in Indonesia, the ramifications stemming from it, and the necessary actions to curtail deforestation while fostering sustainable economic growth.

At the end of this lesson, the students are able to:

  • examine current issues such as climate change in both Indonesia and the global context,
  • formulate an educated stance supported by substantial evidence,
  • engage proficiently in a debate, skillfully presenting and defending their argument,
  • present counter arguments on this topic.
