Chapter 5. Flood

Apart from enduring one of the world’s most severe traffic jams, Jakarta residents must also prepare for severe floods that slam numerous areas of the capital city and its surroundings, commonly referred to as Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi). These floods frequently lead to mass evacuations as people flee their homes. With potential for fatalities, substantial economic losses, and extensive travel disruptions, the floods pose significant challenges. In this lesson, we will explore the debate on whether these floods are man-made or natural disasters and understand why technology alone cannot sufficiently mitigate this ongoing catastrophe.
At the end of this lesson, students are able to:
- examine and articulate the factors contributing to man-made/natural disasters,
- analyze the expressive, cultural, and technical language associated with man-made/natural disasters,
- construct and justify viewpoints on local and global issues concerning man-made/natural disasters,
- compose persuasive and argumentative statements and essays centered around this subject matter.
